Good afternoon my lovely readers.
As a diligent declutter enthusiast, I decided to declutter my document organisers last week. I was flipping through the page of an old notepad when a piece of paper caught my attention. It was tucked between some notes I took during a course I attended just a year ago, yet it felt like a decade had passed. My curiosity was piqued by the first words I had written: “Be gentle with yourself” (see the photo to read the full note) As my eyes quickly scanned the heartfelt message, I was also scanning through my memories trying to pinpoint the moment I wrote that. Then the lightbulb moment…and there I was, sitting on the bed, in an AirB&B loft room, late afternoon, feeling sorry for myself, not knowing where I was going, sad and ignored by the guy I was dating. I was actually trying to lean on something to write, as there was no desk - ah! That’s why the wonky handwriting 😅 I then recalled the uncertainty and turmoil that had consumed my days at the time. Thinking about that moment today, that period really was the apex of the worst year of my adult life. One divorce, one heartbreak, being excluded from a group I shared one of my passions with, being used by and misunderstood by someone who only saw complots and lies in people, feeling insignificant in someone’s life, and more. Wow, that really was a shitty year, haha. I was lost in self-doubt, my vision blurred, and my direction in life unclear.
As I reflect on this re-discovered note, which of course, fully reflecting my style, I had completely forgotten about, I realise the wisdom within those scribbled words. The power of being gentle with oneself during life’s sandstorms is transformative.
Our journey through life requires self-awareness and clarity, much like navigating with Google Maps (we need to tell Google Maps where we are for it to show us the ways to get to our chosen destination). But when faced with challenges, life can resemble a blinding sandstorm, obscuring our vision and making it difficult to see where we are and the path forward. My note from a year ago captured this idea perfectly: "If you are currently in the middle of a sandstorm...your eyes will be shut, and you wouldn't know where you are." In these moments, decision-making can feel overwhelming, and even thinking about what you are going to do with your life scares you as you have no idea. We need some key points in life, but sometimes it feels like there are none. It's important to be patient with ourselves during these turbulent times. As my note reminded me, "You don't want to force yourself to see where you are in life right now." Instead, we must be gentle and understanding, allowing ourselves time to heal and find our direction.
Fast-forward to the present, my life completely changed since writing that note. I now understand the power of patience and self-compassion, especially during life’s most trying moments. Those lessons have allowed me to develop resilience, and the courage to say goodbye to all those people who did not contribute positively to my life and did not deserve my love and attention. I decided to face challenges head-on and embrace the concept that life can be beautiful even when spending time with yourself. There is an Italian proverb that says, “It is better to be alone than to be in bad company” (or similar, it’s weird to find a translation to proverbs that actually makes sense in another language 😂 but you get the idea!). And then just like that, I met an amazing person who loves and supports me every day, to whom I am extremely grateful every single moment ❤️
All I can say is, even though facing tough times can be hard and you may feel like there is no way out, rest assured that after every storm, the sun will shine again. Every experience feels different for everyone and everyone has their own unique experiences. These moments can teach us valuable lessons, as long as we take the time to learn from them. However, as we all navigate the unpredictable nature of life, it is important to remember to treat yourself with kindness. By doing so, you'll discover the strength needed to endure the storm, embrace the beauty that lies beyond, and unlock the love for yourself that everyone in this world deserves.
I would like to extend an invitation to share your own experiences of overcoming (or still facing) your life's sandstorms. How has being gentle with yourself during difficult times helped you grow and heal? Let's create a supportive community where we can learn from one another and celebrate our wins, even the smallest ones. ☺️

Ciao, cari lettori!

This reminds me of the words my lovely Dad would always say: 'when times are tough, wait ten minutes and it will pass. If it doesn't, wait ten minutes more'. I love your point about not being able to open your eyes in a sandstorm - if we can't see where we are now, how do we even begin navigating our way out of the storm? Just beautiful and very evocative. Thank you 🙏
I always try and remember when I’m going through tough times, I’m doing exactly that, going through them. One day I’ll be out the other side & able to look back on all I’ve learned through those dark days, and move forward with renewed joy 😌
