I think also we are hard wired to give more weight to a loss than a gain, and losing a streak can feel like a loss... even though we are no less of a piano player. π π
Thank you Kate! Oh yes, 100%. I think it's supposed to makes us feel that, to keep us glued to the apps π¬ For the first time, this past Sunday I ignored the streaks, and I feel perfectly fine now, I can still remember the chords π Giving voice (written or spoken) to an 'issue' helps massively in terms of its 'resolution'.
I can relate to what you are saying about badges and streaks regarding an app. I was using Duolingo for the longest time to try and learn French but it seemed more like a game format than actually learning the language. They had streaks and badges and hearts that you can lose if you are not consistently using the app. I still want to learn French but I want to utilize another way of learning π
Honestly? I felt annoyed. At first, I was like okay, weβll just go with it but I really was trying to learn and the losing hearts didnβt help. Also, Duolingo has silly sentences for you to learn. One of the sentences it wanted me to learn in French was Β΄There is a horse in my apartmentβ π€·π»ββοΈ Not sure who I would say that to, lol π
I feel that, I know what you mean. And that app is silly indeed.
I remember when you asked for language app recommendations a couple of months ago. As I mentioned before, I still stand by my recommendation of Rosetta Stone. With it, you won't have to deal with any horses in your apartment, and you won't lose any hearts either π
Yep, Duolingo for me too. Same experience. At first, it felt like I was making great progress (Iβm learning Polish) and keeping that streak going, not failing to do a lesson every dayβ¦ I think at day 60 it finally dawned on me that for a long time I hadnβt actually learned anything new (Iβm a bit slow on the uptake π). I was using the app purely to keep the day streak going and to move up on their leaguesβ¦ like a game. It was nonsense. I felt stupid to be honest. Iβm still using it because in my initial excitement I took a yearly subscription, but I do it at my pace and often tell Duolingo to get a life.
Anyway, long story to say, youβre not alone!
Ah and the Polish lessons are also full of silly sentences- Iβve tried to remember one to leave here as an example and I canβtβ¦ that just goes to show my level of learning at this pointβ¦
' tell Duolingo to get a life ' .. I love this! Thanks for sharing, it's perfect to decide your own pace, you are doing something for you, so you can do what feels right to you :)
Very interesting read! π

Oh yes, you are right, language apps do have that too! how did 'losing hearts' make you feel?
