Good afternoon my lovely readers.
I had another type of post in mind for this week, but we'll have to wait until the next to see the topic that I intended (actually already started) to write about.
This week, I want to share some food for thought. Do you feel empty inside when your work is not recognised the way you would like it to be? Do you feel hurt when someone answers you abruptly or looks at you with disgust after making an unintentional mistake and apologising for it? Although I advocate not caring about the judgment of others, sometimes, our brain makes us give more weight to negative things than positive ones. For example, on the same day that I received many compliments from my boss at work and congratulated myself, I did not hesitate to allow the feeling of being useless and thrown down to take over me when faced, just a few hours later, with negative feedback for a different matter. It is incredible how our mind works. We need to find a way to handle these situations better, to be better equipped to deal with these unpleasant feelings. Therefore, I wanted to write this post to share my thoughts.
I believe that interactions with others are essential for our existence, but what should we do when these interactions go bad? We all have our own level of sensitivity to these issues and can feel personally affected by them in different ways. I believe that it all depends on how much we feel connected to that person in question, emotionally but also in terms of time spent together (e.g. a colleague). The stronger the bond, the more we feel personally involved, of course. However, this level of involvement is also inversely proportional to our expectations of that person's behaviour towards us. It can be painful when we feel let down, I know. The key point is that we cannot keep these negative feelings inside. Do you feel attacked or betrayed? Do you feel that your value has not been recognised or that you don't deserve to be treated this way? These negative feelings need to be released because if we keep them inside, as a dear friend of my mother always says, โthey will rot and make things even worseโ. To reinforce this disgusting image, think about leaving fresh food in the fridge for way too long. It changes colour, it starts to stink, and it's even less appealing to deal with. So, it's better to address these negative feelings immediately when they are still fresh and haven't spoiled yet, right? ๐
One way to release these negative feelings is to communicate them verbally. I have noticed that compared to the average Italian person, the average British person puts on a happy face even when things are not going well, and may not appear to be especially upset. This could be because expressing feelings can be more difficult for them. However, this can sometimes lead to outbursts or false friendships. On the other hand, for the average Italian, even a minor disagreement can turn into a big issue. These of course are broad cultural generalisations, and not everyone fits into these categories! Fortunately, a middle ground exists. As someone who has interacted with people from both ends of the emotional spectrum, I can say that it's important to express our feelings without feeling ashamed because we're all human beings. We should avoid reacting with anger because we never know what the other person is going through at that moment in their life. It's important to remember that the words and actions of others are indicators of who they are, not of who you are. Similarly, your own actions and thoughts are an indicator of yourself. You know your own worth better than anyone else. Therefore, it's important to talk about your feelings, communicate effectively, and work towards resolving the issue.
If communicating with those who have upset us is not possible, there is another way to release the negative feelings and thoughts that are weighing us down. You can take a piece of paper and a pen and write everything down. A bullet journal, which is a special diary with dotted pages, is my personal preference, but if you are not familiar with it, a plain sheet of paper will suffice. The purpose of this exercise is to empty your mind without worrying about filtering it, its grammar, syntax, or any other writing rules. Itโs like a โstream of consciousnessโ, a technique made famous by writer James Joyce two centuries ago, and it can help you with self-understanding and self-expression. It reveals the complexity of our human nature. You don't have to keep the paper if you don't want to. Think of it as a "bin" where you can throw everything that is bothering you. After you have written everything down, you might feel like throwing it away. That's perfectly fine. The decision of whether or not to keep it is entirely up to you. Remember, no one has to read it, not even yourself.
Another way to cope with difficult experiences is to confide in someone you trust. This can provide you with several benefits. You can freely express your feelings in a safe space without fear of judgment. Sharing your emotions with someone you trust can help you process challenging situations and gain a new extrinsic perspective on your problems. Additionally, a trusted person can offer encouragement during the toughest moments, making you feel less alone and more understood. By being there for them in the same way, you can strengthen your emotional bond, creating a sense of belonging and intimacy that leads to greater happiness and emotional stability.
Of course, having the opportunity to do all three things would be ideal, but being able to do at least one of them is essential for our mental and physical well-being. This time, I was able to implement two of the three methods mentioned above, and as a result, I felt satisfied and much better.
How do you handle situations when you feel upset by your family, friends, or colleagues? What is your reaction to such scenarios and how do you usually resolve them? Let me know in the comments, I'm curious to learn other techniques and to share with you experiences that have helped us grow โบ๏ธ. Ciao, cari lettori!
Fa male, lo so. ๐)
Ho notato che rispetto allโitaliano medio, il britannico medio fa buon viso a cattivo gioco, non si mostra particolarmente upset (turbato) perchรจ a loro riesce molto piรน difficile, in media, esternare i propri sentimenti.

Good ideas. I prefer the third one as it allows the trusted person to tell you stories that may give you a different perspective on the incident. A reality check, so to speak. If you can refrain from naming the "offending party," the conversation gains some distance and also spares the person from backbiting. The trusted person may like or respect that other and the conversation would be like spreading poison. The second idea is great but doesn't offer the different perspective. The first could be positive or end up giving your offender the opportunity to really skewer you with more insults. Some people are sociopathic and LOVE to inflict pain. If you reveal that you're hurt by their remarks, the games will begin with you as the mark.
Thank you for your insight ๐ค True words indeed. I guess I like to believe there is good in everyone of us although some do their best to not show it. Have you ever met/spent time with anyone that โloved to inflict painโ as you said? If so how did you deal with them?
